Determination of permafrost creep parameters from in-situ measurements
Abstract
Creep parameters were determined from an in-situ permafrost creep investigation carried out near Fenghuo Shan on the Tibet Plateau using an inclinometer system. Basic equations used are those which controll octahedral shear strains and stresses and the Glen power flow law. Use of the latter relationship is justified by the ice-rich nature of permafrost at the field sites. Results indicate that the creep parameter n ranges from 1.70 to 2.0 at stress levels between 5 and 20 kPa and increases with depth.
