Abstract

In this paper method for evaluation of freeze wall stability is raised for the first time and discussions are given to the space —dependent effects on freeze wall deformation and freezing pressure and the analysis of pressure changing rules for frozen ground relating to properties of frozen soils, thickness of freeze wall, rigidity of lining and time of lining installation, etc. with viscoelastic theory. These achievements were successfully used in shaft construction through thick clay layers totalling a length of more than 280m in frozen shafts, Qiuji Coal Mine. The shaft lining was designed to be thinner and the cost of shaft construction was reduced by some 30% comparing with shafts sunk in similar ground conditions in Anhui and Henan Provinces.
