Abstract

A full-scale model test was carried out to evaluate the frost-heave prevention method for reinforced retaining wall named “multi-anchored retaining wall”. The retaining wall, consisting of concrete facing blocks, steel anchor plates, and tension rods, was left in the field for two winter seasons (Nov. ‘91~Apr. ‘93). The quantities measured were temperature, depth of frost penetration in the backfill, forces acting on tie rods, and others. The observation suggested the significant effects of ground freezing on the increase of forces on the reinforcing materials, and proved the effectiveness of two types of frost damage countermeasures.
