Abstract

In order to clarify the mechanism of water movement in partially frozen porous material, frost heave experiments were performed with layered porous plates whose diameter was 10 cm and thickness was 2 cm. Ice lenses were observed to grow between the porous plates during freezing. The frost heave rate increased as 0 °C isotherm passed the interface between porous plates. This suggests that the early growth of the ice lens at the interface is primary heave. Then as the temperature dropped it changed to secondary heave. From the experimental results, we obtained the basic characteristics of both frost heave phases.
