A scale model study of seismic response of an underground opening in jointed rock
Abstract
A scale model is developed and tested to determine the seismic response near a circular opening in a mass of jointed rock. The scaled rock material is fabricated with approximate physical and surface roughness properties to simulate those for naturally jointed welded tuff. Dynamic and accumulated stresses, strains, and displacements are measured at various locations during a series of simulated earthquake events. For the conditions investigated, the results indicate that individual rocks tend to behave as rigid bodies joined by interface compliances.
