Plastic design of single storey pitched roof portals to EC3
Abstract
Plastic design of single storey portal frames has been proved by 40 years of use, primarily in the UK, supported by extensive research. It enables considerable economies to be made compared with elastic design, so making steel extremely competitive. This paper outlines the design of these structures and proposes practical means of detailed designs that are consistent with Eurocode 3. Such methods are a necessary prerequisite for the wider adoption of this form of construction in Europe.
