Abstract

In this work a general scheme is presented for the representation of Structural Design Codes in the form of hypertext and expert systems. Such systems can be part of integrated structural design software with links to algorithmic analysis and dimensioning tools and graphical pre- and post-processors. This scheme is employed herein for Eurocode No 8 that contains the requirements for designing and erecting seismic-resistant structures. The main features of the system are presented with emphasis to the additional requirements for steel structures. The programming techniques employed for this prototype can be generalized for other code-type documents and specifications. Moreover, such systems can be developed in parallel to the code document by a subcommittee exchanging continuously feedback with the experts’ committee. This can result in much better structured code documents.
