Abstract

An electrorheological fluid damper for vibration control of long-span steel bridges has been designed and constructed. It is an inexpensive device with low power requirements which can provide variable damping and stiffness. This variable damper/stiffness device can improve the dynamic response of cable-stayed and other long-span bridges under seismic, wind and traffic loading.
