Abstract

The paper summarises work undertaken by the author, with various colleagues, on the behaviour and design of steel plated structures relating to bridges and offshore rigs. It demonstrates the power of modem non-linear finite element packages in examining the non-linear behaviour of structural components and how the results of organised parametric studies can be used to formulate design guidance. Opportunity is also taken to refer to parallel work by other researchers in the UK which has contributed to the state of knowledge of the behaviour of steel plated structures.
