Abstract

Axiomatic Design Theory has been proposed as a methodology of formalizing the design process which, as opposed to analysis, is not very structured and relies heavily on unpredictable factors such as experience or even intuition, often described collectively with the term “engineering judgment”. This theory has been applied more in manufacturing and mechanical engineering, and only recently has it started being used in civil engineering. This paper attempts to present the basic principles of Axiomatic Design and investigate its applicability for structural problems using guyed towers as a case study.
