Abstract

A four-storey steel framed office building with composite floors has been designed for strong earthquake loads according to the rules of the new Greek Seismic Design Code (NEAK 1992) . Alternative earthquake resistant systems were examined, consisting of ductile frames, diagonal concentric bracings and eccentric bracings. Results are evaluated and appraisal is made of code specific rules and their impact on the sizing and cost of members and connections. Finally, a comparative bill of quantities of structural steel is presented.
