A model for rock mass fragrnentation by blasting
Abstract
The complexity of predicting rock fragmentation under explosive action in excavation works is due to the large number of variables, both controllable and not controllable by the operator, that influence the outcome of these phenomena. Blast design is normally based on empirical criteria helped by approximate formulae or computer software with restricted physical and geomechanical background. A new approach correlating explosive released energy with block size reduction caused by blasting in jointed rock masses is presented, based on concepts of fracture initiation and propagation, and leading to fragmentation evaluations. The basic expression of this model is: https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="block">w=K(sbsa)0.5 where W represents the expended explosive energy per ton of broken rock, K is a constant of the rock mass called fragmeetaaility, and S, and S are maximum sizes of blocks respectively, before and after the blast. Validation of this criterion was obtained by results from field blasts and it is expected that the proposed model may be useful for the mining and heavy construction industries.
