Abstract

A 3-D finite element analysis was carried out in order to investigate the effect of material anisotropy on the Κ I values of the ISRM standard specimens for the fracture toughness testing of rock. This paper analyses the case of transverse isotropy. Numerical results show that the ratio n of Young’s moduli has a significant effect on K I for the ST and ARR configurations of SR specimen. The relation between K I and log n is almost linear. This provides a simple calibration formula in the evaluation of the fracture toughness of transversely isotropic rocks. For the CB specimen, however, the effect of anisotropy is quite small. The effect of the Poisson’s ratio is further almost negligible for both specimens.
