Abstract

This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element model for the nonlinear inelastic analysis of arches. The model includes large displacem ents, large twist rotations, and high order deformed curvatures. An elastic-plastic incremental stress-strain relationship derived from the von Mises yield criterion, a strain flow rule, and a strain hardening rule is used for material inelasticity. The model also includes warping of the cross section, the Wagner effect, residual stresses, and initial crookedness and twist. Applications of the model to numerical examples and comparisons with existing experim ental and analytical results demonstrate that the model is very effective, efficient and accurate.
