Stability and design of steel beams and arches
Abstract
While the strengths of steel structures under static loads are most influenced by their resistances to yielding and buckling, other effects are often important. These include the loading arrangement, restraints, residual stresses, initial crookedness and twist, and pre- and post- buckling behaviour. The simplified procedures used to design steel structures need to account for these influences in an economical and reliable way. This paper illustrates the connections between these influences on strength and the procedures used in the design of beams and arches.
