Abstract

A review of electrical utility transmission line support structures is performed, highlighting the attributes of steel Circular Hollow Section (CHS) poles. Large-scale laboratory tests on two types of transmission line CHS pole connections are then described. These utilized 407 mm diameter CHS poles and evaluated the suitability of typical connection details used by Florida Power and Light Company (FPL), U.S.A., and Saskpower Company, Canada. These tests demonstrated that CHS would make excellent poles and that structural connections to them could be made easily with more-than-adequate safety factors.
