Abstract

A preliminary series of tests have been carried out to determine the effects of local buckling on the axial load behaviour of square thin-walled steel tubes with concrete infill. The steel was not bonded to the concrete infill which only provided restraint to inward local buckling. By changing the mode of buckling, the infill was found to increase the strength of the steel tubes. The experimental strengths were compared with design strengths using Australian Standard AS4100-1990. By using an appropriate elastic buckling coefficient in the design recommendation of the Standard, conservative design estimates were obtained.
