Abstract

Large circumferential compressive membrane stresses arise at the intersection of the large end of a cone and a cylinder when subject to uniform internal pressure. Three failure modes are possible at these intersections: plastic collapse, elastic buckling and plastic buckling. This paper first describes simple and accurate strength equations established in recent studies into these failure modes and the results on which they are based. The range of shell geometries controlled by each of the three failure modes is then clarified using these equations.
