Shapes that don't buckle
Abstract
By considering the effects of initial bending curvature it has been shown that monosymmetric sections can have configurations which can laterally buckle even if the second moment of area about the axis of bending is smaller than the second moment of area about the other principal axis. As well, monosymmetric sections can have configurations which have complex solutions to the lateral buckling load indicating buckling is impossible. Two case studies were presented looking at the lateral buckling load of U-channel sections, without lips and with inward or outward lips.
