Linear failure envelopes for the assessment of welds in bridges
Abstract
At present welded components are designed using S-N curves which are capable of predicting only the fatigue life of the component. The condition of welds at any intermediate period of the life of the weld is found out by undertaking on-site inspections to detect cracks. A theoretical procedure is developed here which can help to determine the condition of the weld before more expensive on-site checks are carried out. This method is based on linear failure envelopes and combines both S/N curves with linear elastic fracture mechanics.
