Abstract

One of the challenging aspects in research and implementation of viscoelastic dampers (VE) is to evaluate the damping characteristics and the effect of the dampers on structures. VE dampers have been incorporated in several high rise buildings in the USA to reduce vibrational motion caused by earthquake excitation and wind loading. These dampers reduce amplitude and acceleration by converting part of the vibratory energy of wind and earthquake ground motion to heat. In the study herein, an attempt is made to investigate the sensitivity and controllability of design procedures of structures with added VE dampers, leading to a procedure for the optimal selection of multi-degree-of-freedom model parameters.
