Development of over-cladding steel system using cold formed sub-frame and composite panels
Abstract
Overcladding is a term used to describe cladding applied over existing walls. It is used to improve the weatherability and appearance of buildings, and may include additional thermal insulation. This development study relates to an innovative overcladding system based upon steel composite panels. The system has three key components: the cladding panel; the sub-frame or rail system to which the panel is connected; and the fixing components used to attach the sub-frame to the existing building. This paper therefore, present the development of a steel intensive prototype re/over-cladding systems which is based on the principle of rainscreen system. The detailing of the junctions between the panel is crucial to the performance of the final assembly, especially to the size and position of the openings that ventilate the cavity. This requirement can be in conflict with the need to fire-stop the cavity.
