Abstract

This chapter aims, (1) to present and discuss soil forming processes and soil distribution under conditions of increasing aridity and, (2) to examine the relationships between pedological, erosional and accretionary processes in deserts. A third section deals with inherited soils and palaeosols presently located in deserts, which developed under varied environmental conditions and which demonstrate the potential of palaeopedology for reconstructing the past environments of deserts.
