Abstract

Snow is believed to have great potential as a source of more chemically, or biochemically, active water, the demand for which has recently increased in the semiconductor and biochemical manufacturing industries. The present study has measured the half-width between 278 - 353 K, and chemical analysis of 5 snow samples as well as of water collected from two locations in an attempt to clarify the following points. Establish the dynamic structure of water using 17 O - NMR. Determine influential factors and quantify their effects. Evaluate the possibility of using snow as a source of active water. As a result, the following conclusions were derived. 17 O - NMR is effective for analyzing the dynamic structure of water, particularly for chemical analysis of snow and the temperature characteristics of the half-width. The contributions of structural factors, temperature, water source, and dissolved ion concentration can be quantitatively expressed by applying a polynomial approximation to analyze the temperature characteristics of the half-width. Snow has great potential to be a source of active water. Therefore, its potential use should be investigated.
