Abstract

Acid rain damage to forests is a major ecological problem around the world. Recently, particular attention has been drawn to acid snow damage to the environment along the Japan Sea Coast. The acid snow and rain are now acidifying the ground and soil, and the acidified soil is affecting the forest, woods, plants, etc. The degree of acidification of soil and the concentration of some elements leached with a mixed solution of nitric and sulfuric acids were examined. Many examples of buildings damaged by acid snow and acid rain can be observed. The corrosion process by acid is especially effective on marble structures. In Eastern Europe this results from the low quality coal that people have used for electric and heating system for many years.
