Abstract

Torsion tests were conducted with cylindrical samples made of frozen loess. The experimental results show that the shearing modulus of frozen loess increases sharply with decreasing temperature in the range of 0– −3°C ; however, in the range of ′3– −10 °C, the shearing modulus increases slightly with decreasing temperature. In the range of 0– −10°C , the transient shearing strength of frozen loess increases linearly with the decreases of temperature. And the deformation process of frozen loess under torsion loading has rheologic behavior remarkably.
