A slope instability study of a sedimentary formation with swelling clay in Southern Brazil
Abstract
This paper presents the investigation of a Med slope in a 3-layer sedimentary formation with expansive clay in Southern Brazil. Geological interpretation, site investigation, laboratory testing and slope stability analyses were carried out. When peak shear strength parameters were considered in the slope stability analyses, calculated factors of safety were too high to explain observed first-time failures. As shown in this paper, good agreement was found when shear strength parameters corresponding to the critical state condition were instead considered.
