Abstract

An old historical retaining structure on the banks of a canal was to be secured by a new underwater sheet pile wall. Vibrating the wall was the most cost effective technique, but with respect to the stability and the deformations there were considerable risks. Therefore a test was performed in which the settlements and horizontal deformations of the retaining wall were measured during and after the vibration work in a testsection with a length of 10 m. The deformations measured were so small that the stability of the retaining structure was never endangered. So the more cost-effective vibrating technique could be used. 720 m of sheet piling were successfully placed. Just at the end of the project 30 m of the old retaining structure failed by sinking vertically into the the ground for about 40 cm. In spite of this damage the savings made by using the vibrating technique were still considerable.
