Abstract

A study has been carried out of the load-settlement behaviour of shallow foundations on naturally structured soil profile and on a compacted layer overlying the natural stratum. Data are presented from rigid concrete footing and plate loading tests interpreted using the finite element method. Appropriate soil parameters are obtained from triaxial laboratory tests and pressuremeter in situ tests designed to account for bounding effects and soil structure breakdown. The proposed methodology has been successfully applied to the prediction of footings behaviour on both homogeneous and layered profiles.
