Abstract

On April 1978 started the construction of an 8 meters high embankment on a normally consolidated clayey deposit in Pescara (Italy). A store building founded on piles was successively builded over the embankment. Due to the embankment weight, consolidation started and a considerable amount of soil settlements took place; then the piles foundation were subjected to a phenomenon of negative skin friction. Topographic measurements were carried out since July 1978 up to April 1992. Field and laboratory investigations were also carried out for soil properties evaluation. The Critical-State Finite Element Program CRISP has been applied to evaluate consolidation settlements acting on piles. To analyse the interaction between a pile and a consolidating soil, a stress transfer approach at the interface was applied.A comparison between numerical results and site measurements is presented; a performance of the embankment in the next future is then analysed, to predict the future increase of soil settlements and the corresponding downdrag and pile settlements.
