A study of bond mechanisms in masonry
Abstract
The bond strength developed by combining three different mortars with a typical dry pressed masonry clay unit was studied. The resultant mortar structures were evaluated using optical and SEM techniques in an attempt to interpret the observed bond strengths and failure modes. In addition the effective transport of mortar fluid was also monitored after the first hour of mortar/unit contact. For the brick/mortar combinations studied this information seems to correlate well with the transport of fines due to brick suction observed in the thin section studies and intum reflect on the bond strength and resultant mode of failure.
