Abstract

The paper examines collaborative education and research programs that have been operating in Australia. In spite of the fact that timber is among our oldest structural materials, developments in grading and production technology have brought substantial changes in the behaviour models for structural timber. The paper addresses ways in which cooperative education and research initiatives can be further developed to lessen work loads for academics and at the same time ensure that teaching and research are relevant to the needs of the market place.
