Abstract

An experimental study of the effect of rice husk ash (RHA) on concrete and mortar was undertaken. The majority of concrete produced in Australia is low strength, 20-25 MPa at 28 days. In the hope to capitalise on this large market, the focus of the experiments was on the use of RHA in concrete with a compressive strength of 25 MPa at 28 days. The RHA used has a silica content of 85% which is in an amorphous form. The characteristics of concrete made with RHA investigated include water demand, strength growth under different curing regimes and for different mixes, pozzolanic reactivity, permeability and carbonation.
