Abstract

The relationship between ductility and strength reduction in the seismic response of structures is considered in this paper. Following a state-of-the-art review, the paper summarises the findings from a series of recent analytical studies. Recommendations for estimating the approximate strength reduction factors for systems with different ductility capacities are made for short period, medium period and long period structures. The effects of earthquake ground motion frequency content on the elastic response of structures is also included in the paper.
