Base isolation for segmental building structures
Abstract
The technique of base isolation has undergone considerable development over the last two decades in an attempt to mitigate the effects of earthquakes on buildings and their contents and has proved to be an effective solution for seismic design. The successful seismic isolation of a building depends on the installation of mechanisms which decouple the structure from potentially damaging earthquake-induced ground motions. Therefore, it is very important to have an adequate understanding of the influence of each parameter in the isolation system and the superstructure on the seismic performance of the isolated buildings.
