Abstract

The aim of this paper is to outline and discuss the contributions made to engineering, both theoretical and practical, by the Melbourne brothers J.H. and A.G.M. Michell. To appreciate their contributions, during what were the formative years of much of present day engineering, it is necessary to widen the horizon and discuss influences with which they were in contact, and to delve a little into the social history of the time.
