Abstract

This paper presents a method for studying the effectiveness of foam support on the elastic post-buckling behaviour of an axially loaded, simply supported plate. This is seen as a first step to gain some understanding of the effect of foam on member strength when used to fill rectangular sections. The effects of varying the width to plate thickness ( b/t ), filler stiffness and plate imperfections are investigated. Results show there is generally little increase in strength by using low density (approx. 0 to 200kg/m 3 ) fillers.
