Base settlement effects on fixed roof storage tank shells
Abstract
The effects of peripheral differential settlement on cylindrical storage tanks with fixed roofs are evaluated for uniform or tapered shells; the imposed settlement is of harmonic form. Stresses are evaluated using membrane theory in the case of uniform thickness, compared with accurate finite element analysis, also used to evaluate the tapered thickness behaviour. The significance of stresses is assessed in special relation to the degree of tangential restraint afforded by a roof. It is shown that stresses in the shell are strongly influenced by the degree of restraint, in the practical range of harmonic number n.
