Pavements as structures subject to repeated loadings
Abstract
The concepts and methods of shakedown theory, which describes the ultimate response of an elastic/plastic structure to cyclic loads, are used to analyse the response of idealised unbound pavements. The pavements are modeled as multilayered structures of Mohr-Coulomb material, characterised by their elastic moduli, cohesion and friction angle. The use of the upper and lower bound theorems of classical shakedown theory to estimate the critical shakedown load is described, and the former is employed to predict the relative importance of various failure mechanisms such as subsurface slip and rut formation.
