Design implications of reinforced soil foundations using soil strain signatures and normalized settlement criteria
Abstract
The paper illustrates the results of research conducted at the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (T-FHRC), located in McLean, Virginia, USA. The results presented propose an optimal size of a reinforced soil foundation (RSF), using soil strain signatures and normalized settlement criteria. Large scale load test results describe the optimal depth of the reinforcement within an RSF. The performance of the RSF is found to be comparable with that of the conventional spread footing with embedment.
