Abstract

The regrading and capping of the consolidated (main) tailings pile (CTP) at the Eagle Mine Superfund site required estimation of the amount of settlement and the time for 90 percent settlement to occur. Lab tests on undisturbed tailings samples were used to determine consolidation characteristics of the various materials and, since CTP closure occurred over a period of years, actual settlement data from areas completed early in the closure process were used to estimate expected settlements for the later areas. The combination of lab test results and field data provide a reliable basis for evaluating tailings consolidation behavior.
