Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy Grand Junction Office is remediating a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act site that includes cleanup of a former uranium millsite in Monticello, Utah, and placement of more than 2.3 million cubic yards of uranium-contaminated materials in a double-lined repository that was constructed with two composite geosynthetic clay/60-mil high density polyethylene (HDPE) liners. A triple-lined evaporation pond was also constructed with a seven-layer geosynthetic liner system. Liner performance issues are evaluated against the benefits and limitations of a comprehensive construction quality assurance program combined with a postconstruction leak-location survey.
