Abstract

Geochemical transport modeling of tailing pore water was performed in order to predict the evolution of water chemistry within tailing ponds from an open-pit copper mining operation and estimate the chemistry of potential seepage from tailing ponds. The geochemical transport code BLT-EC was used to model a one-dimensional profile through a generic tailing pond. Simulated results match reasonably well with observed results from the field, and thus the geochemical transport modeling is shown to be an effective predictor of future water quality in the tailing ponds.
