Abstract

Sodium silicates can be used in a number of applications pertaining to mine waste and waste water including control of particulate emission, as activators for fly ash and other pozzalonic materials, agglomeration of coal fines, and treatment of acid mine water. Soluble silicates applied to mine water act in three ways: (1) Softening of pH to directly precipitate heavy metals as the hydroxides. (2) Reaction of silicate anions with alkaline earth and heavy metals which then precipitate as metal silicates. (3) Gelation of the silicate to produce a substrate for adsorption of metals and other contaminants.
