The long-term repair of the Merriespruit Tailings Dam
Abstract
Apart from the safety measures implemented shortly after the failure of Merriespruit No. 4A dam in February 1994 no further repair work was done on the dam until August 1995. At that stage the Mine decided to repair the breach and to re-commission Compartment 4B, to the south of Compartment 4A. This paper describes the motivation for these measures, the involvement of the Merriespruit community, and the methodology used in closing the breach.
