Deep soil-cement stabilization of soft blue clay on the CA/T Project
Abstract
This paper describes how Deep Soil-Cement Mixing (DSM) technology was innovatively used to solve cost and schedule impacts during design of a complex cut-and-cover tunnel system. The DSM was designed to provide both excavation support and vertical support for tunnels to be installed approximately 18m deep into some of the softest clays on the entire Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T) in Boston, Massachusetts. DSM design rationale, criteria and aspects of quality control are presented.
