Numerical simulation of flow in scour of downstream of Three Gorge spillway
Abstract
The flow in the scour of downstream of Three Gorge spillway induced by the impinging jet is simulated by an implicit numerical model, which is developed by using the K-ε two equation turbulence model and irregular boundary-fitted coordinate system. The computed maximum velocity near the bottom and the pressure of every measured point in the scoured region are compared with experimental data at five special sections. It is shown that the computed values agree well with the measured data. The ∏ow velocity and pressure obtained by numerical simulation can describe the changes of velocity in the whole scour, the whirling state on two sides of the jet, and the energy exchange directly. The strong correlation revealed in the comparisons between the computed and experimental results indicates that the present method is one of an effective tools for the study of safety in high dam construction.
