Observations on characteristics of flow and production of attached algae at riffles and pools in gravel rivers
Abstract
Two field observations were performed in gravel rivers in Tokyo to study the hydraulic and ecological characteristics of riffles and pools. The hydraulic and ecological properties were measured by using various devices. It was found that the water surface texture of the riffles are affected by not only Froude number but also large gravels of channel bed. The activity of the production of the attached algae at riffles is found to be larger than that at pools. The primary production of the algae at riffles and pools are very large, yielding temporal variation of dissolved oxygen during day-time.
