Abstract

This study proposes a method which creates an unidirectional flow by making use of a natural wave energy. The unidirectional flow in a reservoir makes it possible to transport water of a surface layer including a large amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) to a bottom layer in which DO is not usually enough. The following important questions related to application of the method to practical use were taken into consideration. (1) how large are the scale and an occurring frequency of wind waves in real reservoirs? (2) how much is the volume of wave overtopping gained on a floating structure? (3) how much does the concentration of DO at the bottom layer change by sending the water of the surface layer to the bottom layer? The results suggest that the wave energy in reservoirs seems to be large enough to be used for water purification.
