Abstract

Naga Hammahi Barrage extends across the River Nile width of 829 m. It has 100 gate openings. Due to the expiration of the life time, it was decided to replace it. Five alternatives were proposed to replace the old barrage. A two dimensional depth average flow model is employed to study the flow patterns created by passing the flow through hydraulic structure with different alignments. This was achieved by modeling a reach of 5.2 km at Naga Hammadi including the existing barrage. The flow patterns were investigated for the existing conditions covering minimum, dominant and maximum discharges. Also, the flow patterns were studied for each alternative for the same flow conditions. By comparing the results of each alternative with the existing conditions the most suitable alternative was selected. The best flow behavior was achieved up and down stream the structure which is located at a straight reach.
